The cyclicality of job search effort in matching models

چکیده
Abstract The canonical matching model is the workhorse of labour market but lacks a proper amplification mechanism for productivity shocks. One way to amplify effects shocks allow workers endogenously adjust their job search effort: as effort procyclical in model, volatilities increase. Yet, empirical literature points against effort, raising doubts how acyclical (or countercyclical) can coincide with volatile variables models. We show that they value leisure and alternating-offer wage bargaining.

The Cyclicality of Hires, Separations, and Job-to-Job Transitions
counted as unemployed. I show that an increase in the job-finding rate or an increase in the separation rate raises the job-to-job transition rate. Therefore, when I feed the measured time series for the job-finding and separation rates into this simple model, I predict that the job-to-job transition rate should be procyclical (Figure 4). This is quantitatively consistent with two direct measur...
متن کاملThe Job Search Intensity Supply Curve: How Labor Market Conditions Affect Job Search Effort
During the Great Recession of 2007, unemployment reached nearly 10 percent and the ratio of unemployment to open positions (as measured by the Help Wanted OnLine Index) more than tripled. The weak labor market prompted an unprecedented extension in the length of time in which a claimant can collect unemployment insurance (UI) to 99 weeks, at an expense to date of $226.4 billion. While many clai...
متن کاملOn-the-Job Search, Work Effort and Hyperbolic Discounting
This paper assesses theoretically and examines empirically the effects of time preferences on two types of career investments: work effort and on-the-job search activities. Whereas the former increases the probability of getting promoted, the latter affect the chance of receiving an outside job offer. The aim of this study is to test the exponential versus the hyperbolic discounting model withi...
متن کاملWorking Effort and Endogenous Job Separations in Search Equilibrium
This paper considers job separations in a search model with labour market matching and moral hazard. Both workers and firms value productive matches and take actions to increase match stability: firms offer a share of match surplus to provide workers with correct incentives and workers take hidden actions (effort) negatively affecting the match separation rate. Heterogeneous productivity draws ...
